NRCRES representative attends NREA Legislative
Forum
Allen Murray, Director of Intervention Services for NRCRES,
represented the center at the Legislative Forum sponsored
by the National Rural Education Association (NREA)
in Washington DC on March 13, 2006.
This annual event provides
an opportunity for a variety of people concerned with
rural education to come together and learn how the
work of the legislature, administration, the Department
of Education impact of the day-to-day work in rural
schools and communities. A variety of presentations
by representatives from the American Association of
School Administrators, the US Department of Education,
central office and school level administrators from
rural schools, and staff of the NREA made the day productive
and informative. While there was plenty of healthy
discussion about how to best serve our rural school
children and communities, a common goal of providing
the best for our children was clear.

Survey of Distance Education
NRCRES conducted a survey of distance learning in rural schools across
the country. The survey used telephone interviews with a national sample of
rural school districts selected at random from all rural school districts to
learn more about their use distance education. The survey documented the academic
areas in which distance education is used, the various technologies used,
barriers to distance education, readiness for distance education, and
satisfaction with distance education.
We presented the preliminary results of this survey at the National Rural Education Association conference in November 2005. The PowerPoint slides for this presentation are available under our "Presentations" section and here.

Professional Development
NRCRES is creating a series of professional
development experiences for teachers in rural schools
focused on empirically-based strategies for helping
children make a smooth transition into school. When
implemented effectively, the strategies should improve
the academic achievement of students while reducing
dropout rates.
